Horse trekking at Flock Hill Station.
Gather your friends and family and enjoy backcountry horseback trekking on a real High Country working station. You will meet with Heather, your very own special wrangler.
We have a variety of trails to choose from ranging from one day to several days. Ride our friendly Station hacks or you can even bring your own horse.
Explore the wonderful scenery with experienced local guides. Visit our famous limestone formations, or experience the remote back-country of the Waimakariri River valley where you may see wild game. Share the working Station with our shepherds, the half-bred sheep and Angus cattle.
Make your choice from:
The Homestead Rides.
If you like home comforts this is for you. Guests can stay at the Lodge in our cottages, or the cosy shearers-quarters. Our homestead rides are a one-day experience.
- Visit the breath taking limestone area at the film-site of the Chronicles of Narnia
- Ride the Flock Hill home country and visit the lakes of Craigieburn and Grasmere Stations
- Take a loop around Mount Constitution, or visit Noman’s Land and look over the historic Avoca
- Take a short half day ride made especially for you
- Ride our most popular ride. A loop to lake Pearson over the farmland and up to the knoll where the view is outstanding. Then wander down and back to the homestead. Need to allow one and a half to two hours for this trip.
The Musterer’s Huts
Let’s go and “rough it” in the Station’s huts. The rustic peace with no cell phones or hair driers. We take our pack-horses so we have to limit our gear. We can hut-hop from The Broad Leaf to the Rosa. We tailor these rides to suit you and can make it a two day, or a three.
Horseman’s ride—The Young Horse Trek
A real horseman’s ride—an upskilling experience and the real McCoy for you and your young horse. Team building, river crossing, pack-tack and strap, we do it all together. Learn the famous fabulous diamond hitch, and teach your horse to work amongst the herd.
This November at show weekend (10th to 13th ) will be our first so jump in quick.
The Stockman’s Run
Talk to Heather about the Stockman’s Run. Come on a true dinkum muster where you will join in with the Station Staff and their dogs for a ‘roundup’ of the cattle or help muster the sheep.
You and your horse will find this mustering malarkey real fun and you will be helping out too. Not for the novice this one.
Station to Station
Across the river and into the wilds of Mt White. We can even make it a week where you share the Flock Hill experience with breath-taking mountain vistas. A circuit ride of the Waimakariri basin and into the bush of the Southern Alps. Weather dependant this one so be flexible. We can make it work especially for you.
Made to suit YOU:
All treks can be tailor-made to fit in with your requirements. We take your safety seriously and reserve the right to cancel due to unsafe riding conditions such as swollen rivers and high winds. We will gauge your riding ability and take care to keep you safe and not over extend. We match you to a mount so when you book tell us your size, large medium or small, height and ability. You need long trousers and have good walking shoes in your kit. We fit you with a helmet or you can bring your own, and when you make your booking we will tell you what your outfit should include.
Our weight limit for multi day treks is 100kg except by prior arrangement.
Heather will design a special lesson at the homestead just for you and your horse. Upskill your horsemanship before going out on the trails.
Come and enjoy
Bring your non-riding family or friends. While you are out riding the trails, they can stay local and experience the famous rock climbing, caving, walking, fishing, mountain biking or take a quiet picnic down at the lake.
At the end of the day come together and tell stories at the warm fire and bar. We recommend that you enjoy the famous Lodge restaurant – or if you prefer – home cook for yourself in your cottage, or the kitchen in the shearers quarters.
