Mountain Biking and Trail Running
Aside from the extensive range of farm roads that allow you to explore the beautiful high country scenery and include trails around the amazing flock hill limestone rocks (available only to lodge guests), there is also an extensive range of trails through native beech forest and tussock lands just five minutes down the road that link from Craigieburn Valley Ski Area to Castle Hill Village. Come and explore some of the best trails in the country.
Caving at Cave Stream
Cave Stream Scenic Reserve is situated five minutes drive East of the Lodge. The open country surrounded by the limestone rocks makes for a perfect picnic spot or a great place to head for some gentle walking.
If you wish to go through the cave you will need to take torches, warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Tours through the cave are self guided and take less than one hour. You will need to watch the water level in the cave, it is normally waist level on an adult at its deepest. In the summer there are some great swimming holes in the Broken River.
Fly Fishing
Guests are welcome to fish for Rainbow and Brown Trout in the surrounding lakes and rivers such as Lake Pearson, Lake Grasmere and Broken River. We can arrange a guided fishing experience through Backcountry New Zealand.
Backcountry New Zealand is one of New Zealand's leading fly fishing outfitters. They provide a range of fly-fishing experiences from full day guided fly-fishing to Heli-fishing tours. You will need to book a guide in advance, to avoid disappointment. For more information visit Backcountry New Zealand.
